A is for apps: the lowdown on educational apps for kids

Move your textbooks aside, because the world of digital learning is here to stay.

I’ve been teaching for 35 years and began using textbooks plus tech when I realised the great potential for learning with apps. Through my research into app-led education and the development of the LessonBuzz app, I found that there are some key criteria for determining the difference between a game-based app and a quality educational app. Take a look at my ABC’s of apps to learn how to spot the real deal and select the best resource for your child.

A is for Age Appropriate
When selecting apps for your kids, focus on age-appropriateness over class level. By concentrating your app selection on age, you can choose apps that are better suited to address fundamental education milestones. This allows children to work at their own pace, overcoming obstacles to bridge any learning gaps between school and home.

B is for Balance
Maintaining a balance between screen time and play time is important in developing a constructive relationship with app-led learning. Encouraging allotted time for playing with apps at home, is a great way to introduce digital learning to your child. Research has also shown that kids learn better when presented socially – whether that be in a group environment, or with their parents. Parent interaction across screen time and play time goes a long way in creating a more meaningful, balanced learning experience.

C is for Content
Content is the cornerstone of cialismax any educational app. Quality content that reinforces mainstream curriculum with creative storytelling is ideal in communicating meaningful and comprehensive learning. Paired with interactive features such as voice instructions, colourful illustrations, sound and visual effects, and drag and drop functions, quality app content allows children to build on their strengths, giving them opportunities for success and growth.

D is for Destination Education
The obvious benefit of educational apps is that they provide parents with a portable tool for learning-on-the-go. The convenience of having such an engaging source of entertainment and learning is invaluable for time poor parents who want quality resources for their children.

E is for Experiential & Engaging
Apps that demonstrate fun and experiential learning are more likely to engage children, as they encourage participation and the adoption of new skills. Content that challenges children to develop current skills through story-based learning is not only more engaging, but also more successful in producing real educational results.
